Ball Aerospace Named Company of the Year by Colorado Photonics Industry Association

Ball only company to repeat as honoree for bringing international attention to Colorado as a key place for photonics

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 22, 2013 – Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has been honored as the Company of the Year for the second time by the Colorado Photonics Industry Association (CPIA). The award was presented at CPIA’s annual meeting on October 15.

CPIA presents the award each year to the company or institution determined to have contributed the most to the Colorado photonics industry. This is the first time CPIA has honored a company twice for its outstanding contributions. Ball also won the award in 2002.

The mission of CPIA is to unite the photonics industry in Colorado by promoting the strengths and contributions of photonics technologies’ and publicize those strengths at industry trade shows and international business forums.

“Ball’s long association with CPIA makes it especially satisfying to be honored a second time as company of the year,” said Jim Oschmann, vice president and general manager for Ball’s Civil Space and Technology business unit. “We’re proud that our recent contribution of the key sensor technology for the Landsat 8 mission will help scientists achieve a greater understanding of the impact of land use change into a fifth decade.”

CPIA cited several contributions Ball has made in support of space exploration and earth imaging in announcing its selection from more than 200 companies in the aerospace, renewable energy, defense, life sciences, telecommunications, and electronics industries. Photonics-related programs that Ball has delivered in recent years include:

  • Landsat 8: Ball designed and built the Operational Land Imager (9-band, earth-observing spectrometer) launch on February 11, 2013
  • Hubble Space Telescope: Ball designed every operational instrument currently aboard Hubble
  • Deep Impact: Ball designed and manufactured the optical spectrometer that observed the collision between comet Tempel 1 and the Ball-built interceptor
  • Kepler: Ball designed the telescope that has detected several hundred Earth-like planets from other solar systems
  • SBSS: Ball designed the optical system for the DoD Space Based Space Surveillance System which became operational in 2012
  • Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership: Ball designed S-NPP’s Ozone Mapping & Profiler Suite instrument which became operational in 2011
  • James Webb Space Telescope: Ball designed the 18 beryllium primary mirror segments, secondary and tertiary mirrors, a fine steering mirror, and several engineering development units, for the Webb telescope, scheduled to launch in 2018
