Ball Aerospace and DigitalGlobe Finalize WorldView-3 Satellite for August Launch

BOULDER, Colo., May 13, 2014 – Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. is completing final environmental testing on the DigitalGlobe commercial remote-sensing satellite in anticipation of shipping the completed spacecraft to California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base in June for an August launch.
Ball Aerospace has built and integrated the satellite for Longmont, Colo.-based DigitalGlobe, a leading global provider of high-resolution earth imagery and geospatial solutions. WorldView-3 is one of four successful collaboration efforts between Ball and DigitalGlobe to provide the most advanced commercial remote-sensing satellite constellation on orbit.
The satellite and its integrated sensors and electronics have successfully completed thermal vacuum, acoustic, vibration, pyro-separation and electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility testing to confirm the design integrity of the spacecraft. Post-environmental baseline performance and DigitalGlobe ground segment interface testing is underway and expected to be complete by May 23.
WorldView-3 is the first multi-payload, super-spectral, high-resolution commercial satellite for earth observation and advanced geospatial solutions. This addition to the constellation will allow DigitalGlobe’s customers to see more of the earth with greater clarity and extract valuable insights about our changing planet.
Operating at an expected altitude of 617 km, the Exelis-provided 1.1 m aperture telescope combined with the Ball-built Cloud, Aerosol, water Vapor, Ice and Snow (CAVIS) atmospheric monitoring instrument, will return imagery with 31 cm panchromatic resolution, 1.24 m multispectral resolution, 3.7 m short-wave infrared (SWIR) resolution, and 30 m CAVIS resolution.
WorldView-3 is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket during an initial launch window of August 13 and 14.
